These are the differences between the two commercial licenses:

Class A License

With a Class A commercial license, you are allowed to operate a vehicle with a semi-trailer of two or more axles and a weight or more than 26,000 pounds.

These driver’s licenses are for vehicles that require more training and skill to operate, such as:

  • Trailer and truck combinations
  • Tractor trailers
  • Tractor trailer buses
  • Triple and double trailers
  • Flatbeds
  • Livestock carriers
  • Tanker vehicles

Class B License

A driver with a CDL-B is able to operate a vehicle with a weight of more than 26,000 pounds, and one that’s towing another trailer or vehicle that weighs no more than 10,000 pounds.

Class B CDL training allows drivers to maneuver the following types of vehicles:

  • Box trucks for deliveries
  • Straight trucks
  • Dump trucks with small trailers
